    WOLIUM

    Type: Police House

    Location: Woluwe-Sint-Lambert

    Team: VUB/ULB

The WOLIUM police house is designed with a strong focus on user well-being, functionality, and sustainability. The new construction is strategically positioned to maintain a clear separation from the existing school entrances on the same site.

The building’s form is sober and straightforward, reflecting the police force’s serious and authoritative character. Its façade reinforces this identity while maintaining a balanced architectural presence. Natural light and user comfort are key design elements, with a central atrium that bathes the interior in daylight, creating a more pleasant and welcoming atmosphere for both staff and visitors.

WOLIUM is carefully zoned to accommodate different functions. The interior is structured using a grid of CLT (cross-laminated timber) walls, defining public, semi-public, and private areas. The public entrance provides visitors with a visual connection to the central atrium without granting direct access. The semi-public spaces are positioned toward the quieter backyard, away from the busy street, ensuring a calmer environment that fosters more confidential conversations.

Security remains a top priority. To enhance safety, all holding cells, the armory, and other secure areas are located underground, ensuring controlled access and minimizing risk.
